Five Cool (New) Shops to Explore in Lower Manhattan

I reserve Sundays for long walks and unexpected finds. Sometimes these walks are planned, but oftentimes they are spontaneous. I walk at a steady pace and capture the city’s details, street artifacts, signs, shop windows, and displays. This time, I started in the Meatpacking District in Lower Manhattan and headed south. Along the way, I discovered several new shops and openings.

1. KREWE, 67 Gansevoort St.

The New York City flagship store of New Orleans-based eyewear brand Krewe (pronounced ‘Kroo’) is nestled in a historic red‑brick townhouse at 67 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. I liked the airy spacious lower level and plenty of space to try the glasses on. The frame colors are quite unique as well — with many subtle gradients and refined patterns.

2. AIR MAIL, 546 Hudson St.

Air Mail’s first New York-based newsstand, located at 546 Hudson Street in the West Village is a thoughtfully curated store and café brought to life by the team behind the digital weekly newsletter Air Mail, founded by Graydon Carter and Alessandra Stanley. From indie magazines up front, to whimsical barware, to Japanese miso soup kits — you’ll find an eclectic selection for a world traveler.

3. THE GREAT, 480 Broome St.

Founded by New York designers Brenna Gallagher and Polina Veksler, the label’s shop blends luxury basics with a laid‑back preppy sensibility—think cashmere sweaters, striped tees, tailored trousers, and soft shirting. In the back you’ll find a minimal menswear section, home vessels and scented candles.

4. BIBLIOTHEQUE, 54 Mercer St.

A hybrid of bookstore, café, and wine bar located at 54 Mercer Street, where sleek interiors and towering bookshelves make for a welcoming literary lounge. During the day, the front counter serves coffee and light bites, while after hours the space transforms into a wine bar. To boot, indoor film screenings twice a week and a selection of “Last Bottle” – a list of extra premium wines at deep discounts.

5. BOMI, 54 Mercer St., 2nd Floor

Tucked away on the second floor at 54 Mercer Street in SoHo, Bomi is a beautifully curated boutique offering an artfully selected array of home goods, accessories, loungewear, and fine jewelry. I especially enjoyed a few minimal table lamps and glassware.
