I’m quite age-agnostic when it comes to home decor and design objects. Rather than focusing on how old a thing looks, I strip down an object to why it exists and what story it can tell. Antique shops are a wonderful opportunity for me to discover spectacular objects and tools from different eras and magazines, trade journals, ads and signs to inspire work and mind. While there’re many decent antique shops in New York City, I set out to discover larger, more authentic and insightful shops and warehouses out of town.

My first stop is Lafayette Mill Antiques in New Jersey, some 50 miles form the city.

Lafayette Mill has been curating the finest antique dealers in the area for 35 years. Today the 3 floors of the building are packed with local and European finds from 55 dealers.

My favorite — a collection of cameras and train lanterns of all kinds
