The season wrapping up, my favorite thing is to browse around my favorite beer stores for quirky and unique collaborations specifically brewed for the holiday season. Whether those are ales or lagers, with honey or lemon zest — the challenge (and the fun) is to find the most exquisite one. Here’re five of my favorite brews this year.

1. Christmas Ale

Great Lake Brewing Co. (Cleveland, OH)
Alcohol: 7.5%, Bitterness: 3
Malts: Harrington 2-Row Base Malt, Wheat, Crystal 45, Special Roast, Roasted Barley
Hops: Mt. Hood, Cascade
Additional ingredients: Honey, Ginger, Cinnamon

2. Christmas Ale

Breckenridge Brewery (Breckenridge, CO)
Alcohol: 7.1%, Bitterness: 22
Flavors of caramel and chocolate are derived from an abundance of carefully roasted malts.
Hops: Mt. Chinook and Mt. Hood

3. Mad Elf

Tröegs Independent Brewing (Hershey, PA)
Alcohol: 11%, Bitterness: 15
Malt: Chocolate, Munich, Pilsner
Hops: Hallertau, Saaz

4. Honey Orange Tripel

New Belgium Brewery (Fort Collins, CO)
Alcohol: 10%, Bitterness: 25
Malt: Pale, Munich, Pilsner
Hops: Nugget, Styrian Savinjski Goldings

5. Collaboration No. 7

Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, MO)
Alcohol: 6%, Bitterness: 16
Malt: Sonoran White Wheat, honey malt and corn grits
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Lemondrop and Hallertau Blancs
Riesling grape juice, peaches, and lemon zest
Briefly aged on Cuvee No. 5 Tank Staves, French oak staves that impart fruit, spice, toast and tannins similar to aging in a fresh/virgin French oak barrel
