Nils Frahm Live at Knockdown Center in New York City

I’ve been drawn to Nils Frahm’s captivating cinematic beats and tunes for years. Part for his highly developed sense of control and restraint in his work, part for a breath-taking level of emotion and personality.

On a Thursday night, I ventured out to Maspeth, Queens to see Nils Frahm live at the grand space of Knockdown Center. For me it was unlike any other concert I have attended. Frahm’s music is not something you can dance to or sing along — it’s an experience of a much more intellectual kind. What started up as a buzzing crowd sipping beer and exchanging Instagram handles, turned into an almost religious sermon in an instant, once Nils started with a humble piano melody.

The night went on, stretching from the melancholic beautiful piano passages into complex compositions, base piercing through the body and hardly recognizable and novel sounds, like exotic birds, flying around.
